Happy Birthday Kel!!!
We went to the unveiling of Kel's First Place winning entry for the Cape Girardeau Art's Council. She was so nervous and excited! She is so cute. She knew the address, but didn't know where exactly the event was. It turned out to be at a local attorney's house in Cape. The house was quite grand. It was built in the early 1900's on the site of Fort A, one of several forts built during the Civil War in Cape Girardeau. It was the northernmost fort in Cape that gives a great view of the north entrance of the Mississippi River.

Wine and hor's d'oevres were served to the small gathering that attended, probably around thirty people altogether. I didn't recognize anyone, but had a sneaking suspicion that one of the people was local weatherman, Bob Reeves! Kel says no. She knew several of the people there and introduced me to Craig Thomas who does a lot of the mural work around Cape and Jackson. In fact he did an exquisite mural in the South Elementary school library where the kids go to school.

Kel accepted her award for $200 (and several posters of her design) and explained what inspired her design. One of the newest and most outstanding works of art in our community is the Emmerson Bridge. The hand holding the violin bow being pulled across the cables of the bridge represent the variety of music in the region. The paintbrush below the bridge represents the many wonderful murals at the river and elsewhere in the region. The paint on the river represents one way an artist may portray the Mississippi which flows through Cape. The hands using the chisel represent the many fine artists and sculptors in our area. The warm colors representing the variety and spirit of art in the region.

I think it really turned out fantastic! She then got to autograph posters and t-shirts with her design on them for everyone that purchased them that evening. She was so excited and bubbly!

This is the 4th Annual ArtsCape festival. It's held each year in May and has been growing ever since it's inception. This is the first year that they have had the design contest and really want to make it another part of the celebration. They are modeling it on similiar Art Fests around the Missouri/Illinois region and think it will really take off.

We then celebrated her birthday at Bella Italia and had a nice quiet dinner before returning home. Happy Birthday Honey, I love you! -- 2nd May 04
